Igniting leadership, personal development and action
One of the actions identified in the City of Launceston’s My Place My Future Plan was to develop a ‘Neighbourhood Leadership Program’ for the Northern Suburbs of Launceston.
The Ignite Us program helped participants to learn more about themselves and how they could make a difference in the community. Some of the experiences that participants had over the course of the 7-month program, comprising 23 sessions, plus 8 ‘hands-on doing’ activities, included:
- Formal sessions on topics such leadership, creating impact in the community, exploring personality types and conflict resolution
- Meeting other community leaders and doers to hear about their journeys, challenges, successes and lessons learned
- Discussing project ideas to improve local communities, with a particular focus on Ravenswood
A key highlight was that the group helped to raise $12,700 to improve Ravenswood. This included submitting an application the 2021 Great Regional City Challenge (GRCC), mobilising supporters to vote for the Ignite Us pitch and then being awarded $10,000 to undertake the projects nominated. The submission received the second highest number of votes in the GRCC. A significant donation of $2,000 was also received, plus an in-kind donation of $700 of paints and anti-graffiti coating.
The group has completed four projects, with more actions in progress to be completed over the coming months. The participants are keen to continue meeting and working on projects to help the community.
