The Champion Program is a leadership and personal development program, done differently. It connected and empowered people with a disability.
It was initiated by New Horizons Tasmania, with funding by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. It was facilitated by Town Team Movement, Future Common and Jeder Institute. It has been run at 3 locations across Tasmania over 2 programs in 2022 and 2023.
The aims of the program are to:
• Foster hope, optimism & courage in participants
• Build self-confidence and agency
• Unlock skills, energy & passion in participants
• Create deeper connections and friendships between members involved
Some of the themes and activities include leadership and how everyone can make leadership contributions, different styles of leadership, superpowers and vulnerabilities, courage, setting goals, personal values, telling your story and being a champion.
The Champion Program uses a multi-directional learning process, where group facilitators teach and also learn from participants, and participants help to teach each other. It asks everyone involved to be vulnerable, to step outside their ‘comfort zone’ and into their ‘courage space’. It creates the right conditions for personal growth. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and make it fun.

The highlight was watching the growth in the Champions over the 8 week program. They really were #incredible, tackling very challenging topics like turning a weakness into a superpower, exploring personal values and what our journey has been and will be.
